In one of the greatest underdog victories in sporting history, Leicester City won the Premier League title last night, despite nearly being relegated just one season before. Ignoring the fact that bookies were more convinced that the Loch Ness Monster would be found, or that Tulisa would become the Prime Minister of the UK, the Foxes had a fantastic season which garnered the support of nearly evert fan of the beautiful game across the world (Tottenham Hotspur aside…).
“I can’t think of anything that surpasses it in sporting history, it is difficult to put over in words,” explained Gary Lineker, former Leicester player and city native, “I got emotional. It was hard to breathe. I was a season ticket holder for the age of seven; this is actually impossible.”
For Lineker, at least, the fun doesn’t stop there – the BBC pundit promised mid-season to present Match of the Day in his pants if Leicester pulled off the unthinkable and won the league.
Even Tom Hanks recently got in on the act, claiming that he had put £100 on the Foxes winning the title, proving that every across the Pond the vast majority of people were behind the wonderfully mild-mannered Claudio Ranieri and his team all the way.
Only time will tell if Leicester can build on their success, but with Champions League games up and coming next season with the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich, bookmakers will be thinking long and hard about the odds on Leicester triumphing in Europe…
