When it was announced last year that iconic 90s girl group the Spice Girls were planning a massive comeback and an arena tour, a palpable frisson of excitement shot through the world of music at the prospect of Scary, Sporty, Baby, Ginger and Posh teaming up once again on stage.
Soon, it became clear that Posh and Sporty, aka Mel C, would not be joining the venture, but nevertheless Gerri Horner, Emma Bunton and Mel B forged ahead as G.E.M. But alas, things have once again taken a turn for the worst in the tale of these pop superstars.
First, Gerri quit the newly created trio to focus on her new family (in a move eerily similar to the reasoning behind her original departure from the band), and now Victoria Beckham – who holds joint writing credits on chart-toppers such as 2 Become 1 and Spice Up Your Life – has called in legal help to stop Emma and Mel performing any of the girl group’s classic hits.
“The girls are devastated. Victoria was a huge part of their lives and now she is using lawyers to block their comeback,” a source told The Sun. “Victoria is proud of her Spice Girls history but this suggests she wants to cut all links with the group which transformed her life. She is resorting to aggressive legal letters and it is an extremely sad way for things to end after all they have been through together.”
