How Hugh Jackman becomes Wolverine

Hugh Jackman chats to Men's Health magazine about how he gets in shape to play Wolverine and why he and his character aren't completely different...

If you have a Men’s Health magazine subscription, you’ll have just received the August issue with X-Men star Hugh Jackman on the cover.

Jackman plays Wolverine, one of the most iconic characters from the comics and as such has to have apretty darn impressive physique to convince us that he’s as strong (and angry) as we’re led to believe.

He’s not so different from his character, though, it seems…

“When I was younger I was very explosive. I used to let most of it out playing rugby. I’m not as explosive now but in a sense it’s still there,” Jackman tells the magazine.

“It’s in our DNA. Aggression is a primal thing and it needs to be exorcised in some way; far better to have it in a controlled violent environment. So in a way playing Wolverine is good therapy.”

When it comes to bulking up for the role, he doesn’t have the most orthodox method. “I eat one steak a day minimum. Now I don’t know any doctors recommending a 12oz steak every day. I’m pretty sure that’s not good. And my carbon footprint is disgusting,” he says.

“Still, I think after this film I need to be vegan for a while, just as my way of giving back to the animals.”
