If you have a National Geographic magazine subscription, you’ll have just received the August 2013 issue. This month they answer one of life’s biggest questions… just why do we love sugar so much?
Looking at the feature might be a sugar lover’s worst nightmare, as they list the amount of sugar in various sweet drinks such as Coca Cola, Orange Fanta, Red Bull and even Ocean Spray Cranberry juice – believe us, the results are pretty shocking.
They caught up with a number of schools in America to discuss the huge problem with obesity and many schools are tackling the problem head-on by removing drinks machines, baking food rather than frying it and even offering fruit as snacks rather than sweets.
It seems that when sugar enters the bloodstream, it has a similar effect on the brain to heroin and cocaine, which is why we love it so much. Sugar can quite literally become a lethal drug – yikes!
