Title: Prima
Prima magazine has revealed how homeowners can grow their own apples from a pot-grown plant.
It explained that there is no need to have a large garden to produce tasty fruit and enjoy an attractive apple tree.
They can instead be grown in a container on a balcony, patio or any other sunny spot and will produce blossom in the spring and fruit in late summer.
The pot should be at least half a metre wide to begin with and should have a drainage hole at the bottom.
It should be lined with a 2.5cm layer of gravel or broken crocks and filled with compost, before the tree is planted inside.
A tree skate should be pushed into the container and tied to the plant, with maintenance consisting of regular watering and feeding.
The magazine suggested that May is the perfect month to get started and that there are a whole range of varieties to choose from depending on your taste.
However, it is important to have more than one apple tree as they are not self-fertilising and require a partner to be successful.
Meanwhile, the Royal Horticultural Society website is regularly updated with tips for those hoping to grow their own fruit and vegetables.
