Geographical magazine looks at possible repeat of Stolen Generations

The official magazine of the Royal Geographical Society has published an article questioning whether the aboriginal boarding schools being set up in Australia could be history repeating itself.

The Stolen Generations refer to the decades of aboriginal youngsters being taken from their parents and sent to schools run by missionaries - a practice that ended in the 1970s.

However, Geographical magazine has questioned whether the planned boarding schools and hostels for aborigine apprentices are a little too close to a dark part of Australia's history.

It explained that education levels among young aborigines are poor at the moment and told the story of one 14-year-old who had learned to mimic what his teacher wrote on the whiteboard, but little else, during his ten years at school.

The boy's head teacher appealed to the parents of pupils at his school to ensure their kids attended or he would be forced to close the high school class.

The solution to such problems that has been proposed is to send the youngsters away for school terms, although this has caused a difference of opinion as old stories of the Stolen Generations are remembered.

Film lovers who watched the Baz Luhrman movie Australia may be familiar with the concept - the flick's young protagonist is continuously dodging being taken to a missionary school.ADNFCR-2767-ID-19512138-ADNFCR
