Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens in Town & Country

Downton Abbey actor Dan Stevens speaks to American magazine Town & Country about his role.

There has been a lot of talk about Downton Abbey actor Dan Stevens of late, and whether he will be returning to the show for the next series.

The show has been a huge success in the States and it is thought the Dan wants to pursue his career across the pond – strike while the iron is hot if you will. The actor is even featured in the current issue of American magazine Town & Country.

Speaking to why he was drawn to the role of Matthew Crawley in the first place, he admits it was down to the script. “It had tongue and cheek nods to modernity, which I enjoyed.” He also describes his ideal career as “quite surreal and probably quite offensive”.

The magazine also chatted with Downton creator Julian Fellowes to ask why they chose Stevens. “We were looking for a young man who was handsome, of course, but who conveyed a real sense of uprightness,” he says. “Not an antihero but a real hero – someone who, at the same time, seemed strong and rigorous and interesting. Dan seemed to possess all these qualities. He is able to make a kind of niceness sympathetic in a way that harks back to an earlier tradition: Jack Hawkins or Kenneth More or Gary Cooper or Cary Grant.”

We’re very excited for the Christmas special this year and hope that Dan decides to stay... we’re not sure we could take a Mary/Matthew split!
