Blood Diamond and Shutter Island star Leonardo DiCaprio has spoken to Esquire magazine about his regrets over the night one of his heroes died.

The Titanic actor explained that he idolised River Phoenix as a teenager and has always regretted not saying hello to him the night he died.

DiCaprio, who also starred in Romeo and Juliet, told the magazine that he had always wanted to meet Phoenix.

"One night, I was at this Halloween party, and he passed me. He was beyond pale - he looked white," he revealed.

Before he had a chance to meet his hero, Phoenix was gone, on his way to the Viper Room, where the 23-year-old later died of a drug overdose.

River was the oldest in a family of actors and actresses, including Joaquin Phoenix, Rain Phoenix, Liberty Phoenix and Summer Phoenix.

DiCaprio told Esquire that there was a lesson to be learned from his experience with the Stand By Me star.
