Carey Mulligan on being Gatsby’s Daisy

Carey Mulligan talks to Vogue about playing Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby, co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire.

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, it can’t have escaped your notice that the world is waiting with bated breath for next month’s release of visual feast The Great Gatsby, starring Carey Mulligan, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire.

Speaking to Vogue USA magazine (whilst looking very dapper and Daisy-esque in the photo shoot), Carey Mulligan talks about her excitement about making the film. When waiting to find out if she’d got the part, she admits that the suspense wasn’t fun. “I was trying to be cool, but oh, it was horrible,” she says. “It was terrifying, the suspense. I was winding down on shooting Drive, so I wasn’t working that much, just waiting around for the phone to ring and for me to be disappointed.”

She also admits that the production in itself was quite an experience, which we would have guessed just by watching the trailer. Describing the making of the film she says: “It was crazy and exhausting and quite overwhelming… the biggest, craziest production I’ve ever been involved in.”

Mulligan is a British actress who started in films such as Pride & Prejudice and An Education but has gone on to make a great name for herself over in Hollywood. Whilst she’s delighted that things have turned out so amazingly well for her, she does find it a little strange.“It’s unsettling that you get exactly what you wanted,” she says. “Not like some version of it, not a slightly lesser version of it, but exactly. You’re like: This is weird. It is weird.”
