Twelve actors have played the time-travelling Doctor since William Hartnell first took on the role in 1963, and so far all of them have been men. But could Night Manager star Olivia Colman be the first female Dr. Who? Bookmakers are starting to think so since her odds fell from 20/1 to 5/1 in the last 24 hours. “Since our market opened we’ve seen a wave of support for Olivia Colman to be the next Doctor Who,” said a Betway spokeman.
Rumours have been flying since Capaldi’s shock announcement as to who will fill his time-travelling shoes, with Ben Whishaw and Richard Ayoade rumoured to be in the running. Whishaw was said to be up for consideration last time they were casting for a role and said the time: “I don't think you can be Q and Doctor Who. It would be a bit wrong.”
Colman is certainly hot property right now following both Golden Globe win and Emmy Award nomination for the Night Manager. Billie Piper, who played the Doctor's assistant when David Tennant was the Time Lord, also chimed into the discussion, tweeting that it would be a 'welcome turn' for a woman to take the role.
