Game of Thrones and award victories go together like cheese and wine, and at last night’s Emmy Awards the fantasy phenomenon picked up three more awards to take its total to 38 – the highest number of awards won by any fictionalised series, and one higher than its nearest rival, Frasier.
Another big winner came in the form of The People vs O.J Simpson, which won five awards, including 3 acting awards for the performances of Courtney B Vance, Sterling K Brown and Sarah Poulson.
And fresh from the furore surrounding the identity of a certain Mr Hiddleston’s date on the night, those hoping for a celebrity slip-up weren’t disappointed, as Homeland actress Claire Danes stepped out to present an award in a worrying amount of fake tan – drawing some mean-spirited comparisons on social media to another tanned celeb that has been dominating the headlines recently.
Other winners on the night included Dame Maggie Smith – grabbing her third Emmy win despite having never attended any of the ceremonies – and Night Manager director Susanne Bier, who was the only female nominee in her category.
