Doctor Who and Top Gear 'cost BBC too much'

People with a Radio Times magazine subscription can read an interview with Trevor Eve which sees him criticising the BBC for spending too much on certain shows.

Anyone with a Radio Times magazine subscription can read about how Waking the Dead actor Trevor Eve thinks hit shows such as Doctor Who are too expensive.

Speaking to the publication, the actor said that drama suffers because series such as Top Gear sap the BBC's budget.

Referring to Doctor Who, Eve said: "The programme is great, but it was created for kids in 1963.

"One doesn't need to say more. They spend too much on Top Gear, too."

"I'm not saying everything popular is bad, but it's desperate when nothing can exist unless it achieves financial rewards," he added.

The actor even criticised his own show Waking the Dead saying it should have been axed in 2007.

Doctor Who and Top Gear are two of the BBC's biggest brands and produced sales of £147 million in the past year thanks to selling programme rights to other countries and the popularity of related merchandise.

Over 11 million people tuned in to watch the 2010 Doctor Who Christmas special, while 5.86 million watched Top Gear on Boxing Day.
