Is Barbie set to be the new feminist icon of the decade? In an unlikely twist, the ‘Trainwreck’ comedian, Amy Schumer, has been announced to star in the new Barbie movie, which will be released in the summer of 2018. Schumer is known for her outspoken stance on gender politics, casual sex and body image, and therefore was an unlikely choice to play the girly, doe-eyed plastic doll.
The film will be a mix of animation and live action, where the story follows Schumer, who gets booted out of the fantastical Barbie land, because she doesn’t fit in to the standard mold. She rejects the superficial, ‘perfect’ persona that the Barbie doll has embodied since its creation in the late 50s, and goes on a journey of self-discovery.
Through her adventures in the outside world, Deadline has revealed that Barbie comes to the
realisation that “perfection comes from the inside, not the outside, and that the key to happiness is belief in oneself, free of the obligation to adhere to some unattainable standard for perfection".
The studio is still waiting to lock in a director, but the intention is for the film maker to be a woman. The new Barbie production promises to be a mix of light hearted comedy, a journey to self-acceptance, and total female empowerment!
