Oscar Snub Surprises?

While this year’s Oscars looks set to be the most diverse ever, there were legions of fans who felt the Academy had overlooked some seriously good cinema…

A musical with 14 nominations? Check. Diversity across the board? Check. Mel Gibson back in the Hollywood fold? Check. The Academy Awards released their nomination on the 24th, and by and large they were celebrated – but there were still some surprises when it came to Oscar snubs

Silence met with…silence

It’s a passion project that has been worked on by legendary director Marin Scorsese for over three decades, but his epic investigation of the Jesuit Priests in hostile, anti-Catholic Japan in the 16th century has failed to be nomination for any award.

Hanks but no Hanks

On-screen American hero Tom Hanks playing real-life American hero Chesley Sullenberger – the man who landed an ailing plane on the Hudson River in 2009 – directed by all-American hero Clint Eastwood? Sully appeared to be a shoe-in for nominations across the board, but incredibly didn’t make the cut for any category.

Sixth Time Unlucky

Poor Amy Adams. The glamourous flame-haired actress already had five nominations – four Supporting Actresses and a Best Actress – before she lit up the screen as the lead in Denis Villeneuve’s thinking man’s sci-fi film Arrival in 2017. Unfortunately for Adams, the Academy decided that her performance wasn’t even worth a nomination this time around, which some fans have considered a bit harsh.

Ryan Riding High No Longer

Everyone loved Deadpool right? Everyone except the Academy that is, who decided that even the best superhero movie possibly ever wasn’t good enough to be the first comic-book adaption to garner an Oscar nom. Deadpool fans can rest easy in the knowledge that a sequel to the R-Rated blockbuster is already in the works, and that Batman V Superman didn’t make the cut either.

Not Since 1975

That’s how long it’s been since a Golden Globe winner in one category hasn’t been nominated for an Oscar in the same category…until Nocturnal Animals star Aaron Taylor-Johnson missed out on Best Supporting Actor this year. His co-star, Golden Globe-less Michael Shannon, was nominated instead!
