With his blonde hair in a side-parting and an enormous grin on his face, young Prince George poses for his first appearance on a British stamp. The photo is taken from a larger portrait featuring four generations of the House of Windsor and was taken in 2015 by photographer Ranald Mackechnie.
The future king was pictured with his great-grandmother Elizabeth II, grandfather the Prince of Wales and father William in a Buckingham Palace drawing room. To ensure that the two-year-old was level with his elders he stood on four foam blocks tied together with tape and his holding his father’s hand.
The group family photograph appears as a stamp sheet - with perforations positioned to create a first class stamp for each of the four royals. The stamps coincide, not just with the Queen’s birthday, but also the 500th anniversary of the postal service and the queen is to be presented with a collection of stamps marking her achievements over the years.
