To celebrate 45 years since Mr. Happy, Mr. Grumpy and all the rest of the cheery (or maudlin) gang first arrived on the scene, Royal Mail has released a special ten-stamp set.
Created by Roger Hargreaves in 1971, the beloved characters have become an integral part of British heritage, spawning a plethora of television shows and merchandise. Hargreaves created the books after his young son Adam asked him what a tickle looked like, and since then 50 Mr Men and 36 Little Miss books have been published.
Hargreaves’s son Adam, who took over after his father died in 1988, said: “I think my father would have been chuffed. It’s a real accolade for the Mr Men and Little Miss characters to be on a Royal Mail stamp.”
The stamps are available from Royal Mail, and there are a variety of options: from a presentation set telling the Mr. Men story, to a simple collectors’ sheet and postcards.
Philip Parker, of Royal Mail, said: “The Mr Men and Little Miss characters are a worldwide phenomenon. People identify with the different character traits, and we hope these stamps will brighten up sending and receiving mail.”
