Happy 175th Birthday To The Economist

James Wilson, a hatmaker from Scotland, founded this newspaper in September 1843 to argue against Britain’s Corn Laws, which imposed punitive tariffs on grain. Since then, The Economist has been advocating free trade, free markets and open societies ever since. Here are some of its iconic moments…

Every civilised society needs at least one publication who is willing to tell the hard truths…

Sometimes these truths with be tragic…

Other times they will be frivolous.

But along the way there will be moments of glory and defiance…

and days of despair.

Highlighting the very best aspects of freedom…

Shoulder to shoulder with the very worst.

Of course a sense of humour is important…

Particularly in the face of destruction…

and rest assured, The Economist will always be there as we look ahead to a brave new world, full of new joys and inevitable challenges.
