The October issue of Wired focuses heavily on design. You may have noticed that as Thomas Heatherwick is proudly displayed on this month’s cover.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with him, Thomas Heatherwick is the designer behind the Olympic cauldron and the new London buses.
Wired catch up with him at his studio in King’s Cross, where he shows them around his workshop, showing off various pieces and even the tools he’s created. “A lot of the design is designing tools to make the piece you need. And jigs! Inventing jigs that will do different things,” he tells the magazine.
He also talks about his upcoming projects, including the redevelopment of the Pacific Place complex in Hong Kong and incorporating the use of a Singer sewing machine to serve in the design development of a current project.
However, the issue also celebrates other great minds in design and Heatherwick has compiled his list of design genius’.
His list includes Bellapart Group’s lead craftsman Francesc Orri Bril-Li, Contour Autocraft’s owner and director Bruce Macleod, creative director and curator of materials at the Institute of Making Zoe Laughlin and Heatherwick Studio’s own head of making Mark Burrows.
