Los Angeles based start-up Ambidio are aiming to change stereo sound into surround sound through the power of the brain. In an effort to get huge, cinema quality sound from a simple laptop and speakers, Ambidio are combining encoding technology with the existing manner in which our brains interpret sound.
The company are claiming that their product can make stereo sound appear three times ‘wider’ than existing technology, and Iris Wu, the start-up’s creator, says that it’s as much about conventional neuroscience as it is about new tech advances.
"We try to understand the whole process, how the brain interprets sound events. For example, we actually keep monitoring the environmental sound all the time, and have the ability to choose what we want to focus on, and what we don't. Knowing these really help us to fine tune Ambidio, not only make the effect more compelling, but also make it work for everyone."
The idea behind Ambidio was started, according to Wu, after she watched Michael Bay’s film Transformers. “The sound from my laptop was so tinny,” Wu told WIRED online, “I began to think about how I could get better sound from such a little device.”
The start-up is beginning to generate a substantial amount of buzz in both the tech community and the world of celebrities. With investment coming from technology companies Horizons and Ventures, as well as ex-Black Eyed Pea and judge on The Voice, will.i.am, Ambidio looks set to take the world by storm once a completed model is featured. Even Skywalker Sound have taken an interest – signing on as a strategic advisor to provide a wealth of fantastic sound experience to the relative newcomer.
If proven successful, Ambidio may well become the preferred system for student halls and movie fans everywhere who are aiming to get the biggest possible sound from their desktop setup – so stay tuned to all the developments witha subscription to WIRED magazine, now with 30% off.
