How to shoot snow scenes

With a What Digital Camera? magazine subscription, you can find out how to photograph snow scenes.

If you've got a What Digital Camera? magazine, you'll be able to work out how to take photos in the snow.

According to the mag, camera metering systems can often find snowy scenes a bit problematic as it "judges its exposure by looking at at the details in the scene and choosing the right settings to record a balance between shadow, midtone and highlight details".

There are plenty of ways to counter this though. One way is to use exposure compensation to boost it to the required level, reports What Digital Camera? magazine.

Another way is to look at the histogram - for very snowy conditions it will probably be weighted more to the right-hand side.

"If you're shooting a subject against a snowy background, try switching to a different metering mode such as centre-weighted or spot," the magazine advised.

According to the Met Office, the snowy and icy conditions are set to continue over the festive period, with heavy snowfall expected in eastern regions of the country.
