Assassin Anton Chigurh, Bond villain Raoul Silva and pirate-hunter-turned-undead-revengeful-rogue Armando Salazar – Javier Bardem’s filmography is full of terrifying characters seemingly bent on raising hell on-screen. But, as the Academy Award winner’s interview in the May issue of Esquire proves, he’s also capable of revealing parts of his private life with wife and fellow superstar Penelope Cruz.
"What we have is the most important thing: a past," he says. "We knew each other back at the very beginning of it all, and that is important because when we saw each other again, I saw her and she saw me."
The 48-year-old also opens up about learning English by listening to the music of Aussie rockers AC/DC, and how he gained his reputation for tackling head-on even the most dangerous of parts. He even reveals his plans for an upcoming movie about cartel leader Pablo Escobar, which he will star in and produce alongside long-time cinematic collaborator Cruz.
And that's not to mention his revelations about his latest foray into the world of blockbuster franchises as ghostly pirate hunter Salazar, who will square off against Johnny Depp's iconic Captain Sparrow in this year's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
