Using their influence to change the world, the son and daughter of Will and Jada Smith are swiftly on their way to enlightenment. In their interview with Pharrell Williams, the 15 and 18-year-olds offer themselves as examples of just how aware today’s teens really are.
Pharrell began his interview by asking: “So, what’s up, guys? What’s on your mind, Willow?”
Unlike the stereotypical image the moody teenager, Willow offered a deep musing about her morning: “This morning actually was pretty intense because I was thinking about the world and my place in the world, things that I have made or want to make,” she told Pharrell. “I was thinking about all the things that I could do that I don’t do. But, you know, I was just thinking about the world and everything.”
That’s a lot to be thinking about over breakfast, but it turns out that these siblings read a lot of philosophy. When asked about their favourite philosophers, Willow revealed that she loves Osho.
“I don't know if you would call him a philosopher” she considered, “I would just call him a really cool dude. Osho really changed my life. Because the way that he spoke about emotion and the male and female energies in the world and how people react to the world around them, it's so simple, yet it has such a depth.”
“It made us realize that being aware in the moment of right now is just the most important thing.” Jaden agreed. “All of our issues come from us not being aware enough or not seeing through our problems to the depths of the issues.”
It turns out that the young Smiths can come up with some pretty thought-provoking existential musings themselves. Pharrell asked the multitalented brother and sister if they had “any philosophical questions” that they’d like to put to the world, and Jaden replied:
“A question I would like to present to the world is: Where is the love? And what are we doing? Who's making the decisions that are putting us in the predicaments that we are in, with all of these people losing their lives around the world in so many different ways?”
Following in the footsteps of the Black Eyed Peas c.2003, and John Lennon c. 1971, these young stars have realised that love is all you need.
As for Willow, she had her own philosophical gems:
“How are humans going to start taking responsibility for the actions that they take?” she asked. “When are we going to stop pointing the finger at someone else for something we do unconsciously? How are we going to start being aware of those things and changing those things?”
So where do these illuminating A-list offspring see themselves in ten years? Gone apparently.
“I see myself in the mountains somewhere in a tent cooking a squirrel.” Willow laughed.
“Nah, you're going to be a vegetarian.” Jaden said. “You'll be surviving off grass in the morning.”
“Yeah, bro!” Willow agreed. “I want to retreat back to living off the land and just being in nature, experiencing life in the most pure, natural way possible.”
