On Friday the 28th of October the Waldorf Astoria was overtaken by a whole host of celebrity witches, ghouls and, er... bodybuilders. At her annual Hulaween party Midler reigned supreme, dressing up as Winifred Sanderson, her wicked character from 1993’s Hocus Pocus.
Raising funds for The New York Restoration Project, the event included a live auction and a costume competition hosted by designer Marc Jacobs who was dressed as a female bodybuilder, replete with turquoise bikini, silver belly ring and Christian Louboutin peep-toe stilettos. As judge, Jacobs was exempt from the competition but Midler was quick to point out that he would have otherwise won.
Guest were treated to a sumptuous three-course meal which included vile-varmint pumpkins (miso greens sprinkled with roasted pumpkin seeds and candied pecans in a sherry vinaigrette sauce), graveyard meatloaf (ground meat drizzled in a blood-orange glaze with whipped purple potatoes and acorn squash on the side), and double trouble cauldron bubble (salted caramel and dark chocolate mousse fudge brownie bites with kiwi gelee).
The starry spooks and goblins then continued to ‘haunt’ the famed New York hotel until the small hours as singer Darlene Love performed some fabulous retro grooves.
