Iconic Covers: Great British Boyband Members

Former One Direction member turned stylish solo artist, Zayn Malik, is one of Elle’s five September cover stars. In celebration of the renowned heartthrob’s cover, here’s a look back at some of the best British boys to have been immortalised on iconic magazine covers…

1. John Lennon - Cosmopolitan Magazine- December 1964

Five years before the Beatle’s split up, breaking hearts accross the globe, John Lennon appeared on the cover of Cosmopolitan Magazine. Union Jack jacket in tow, a sixties polo neck, and his bowl haircut nonchalantly swept to the side, Lennon must have had Beatles fans swooning at magazine stands across the country.

2. George Michael – Rolling Stone Magazine – January 1988
Less than two years after Wham! split, George’s brooding brown eyes and perfectly quaffed blonde hair appeared on a sophisticated monochrome Rolling Stone cover. This was George’s chance to display his serious side, which sadly meant no more prancing around in brightly coloured hot pants on stage with Andrew Ridgeley!

3. Mick Jagger – Vanity Fair - February 1992
Proving that no one moves like Jagger, Mick shook those famous hips and showed off that popular pout for Vanity Fair's 1992 cover. In all black, Mick’s barely-there shirt left women giddy to see more…

4. Liam Gallagher – Vanity Fair – April 1997
At the height of 90s Britpop, Vanity fair published a cover that perfectly captured the period featuring the ‘Cool Britania’ couple of the moment: Liam Gallagher and Patsy Kensit. Before his drunken fights and 'loutish' insults, Liam was every Britpop-loving girl’s khaki Parka-clad dream.

5. Robbie Williams – Vogue – October 2000
Mario Testino shot the cheeky Robbie Williams, and his peachy bottom, for an unforgettable Vogue cover. Not even the statuesque Gisele in a union flag bikini distracts from the former Take That member’s pert derrière.

6. Harry Styles – Teen Vogue - December to January 2012
Harry Styles set hearts racing with his Teen Vogue cover. The cover secured his, as well as the rest of One Direction’s, status as Britain’s next heart-melting boy band. Each member had their own cover shot, but Harry’s floppy locks and starry blue eyes won the most attention from their frenzied fanbase.

7. Garry Barlow – Vanity Fair – October 2013
Photographed at the Royal Albert Hall by John Wright, the cover came out just before Gary announced his much anticipated solo album. Shown wearing a watch gifted to him by his wife, Gary discussed the passing of time during his life in a truly heart felt interview that moved women to tears across the country.

8. Zayn Malik – Elle UK – September 2016
Swauve, pensive and handsome, Zayn appears on one of Elle UK’s September covers. Titled the ‘Rise of the Rebel’ issue, Zayn’s rugged yet sophisticated style and tattoos work perfectly for this stunning black and white cover. With his new solo album Mind Of Mine already topping the charts on both sides of the Atlantic, Zayn is sure to have many more iconic covers to come.
